Tips for Healthy Hair All Summer Long

Admin

Your hair has unique challenges every season, and summer seems to bring on the biggest challenges of all. Saltwater, chlorine, humidity, and sun damage all bring dryness, breakage, split ends, and frizz to your hair. At Special FX Salon, we know how to keep your hair healthy and we have the professional products to keep your hair shiny, smooth, and healthy in-between visits.

Begin with a trim. This spring, haircuts were pretty much out of the question unless you tried to do them yourselves. Now that we’re open, having a regular trim at least every 6 weeks is the first key step to maintaining a healthy head of hair. By removing those split ends, your bad hair days will be a thing of the past.

Keep your hair protected from sun damage. While sun and summer go hand-in-hand, dry hair doesn’t. Heat and UV rays can damage hair and fade your hair color long before its time for your next color. There are special sunscreen sprays for your hair to help protect it. You can also use a colorful scarf or wide-brimmed hat to cover your hair when you’re in the sun to prevent color fade and heat damage.

Deep condition at the salon and at home. If you’re in the sun a lot this summer or regularly swimming, either in chlorine or saltwater, your hair is probably more dried out than you realize. Remember to give your hair a cool rinse after swimming to help minimize the damage. Nourish and promote healing to your hair with our deep conditioning treatment at the salon that works to rehydrate, smooth, and strengthen your locks.

Following up with a weekly conditioning treatment and using hair care products targeted at hydrating your hair at home will keep your hair healthy and will go a long way in preventing dry, frizzy hair. Your stylist will give you recommendations for the best Pureology® or Redken® products that are formulated to your specific hair type and needs.

Forget the heat. Heat damage from styling tools tends to leave your hair looking frizzy and dull. That extreme heat opens the cuticle, which causes much-needed moisture to escape from your strands. Using a thermal protectant will seal the cuticle and help to protect your hair if you have to use styling tools in your daily routine. For best results, avoid styling tools altogether and go for a natural air-dried style. Simply spray your hair with hair care products that will nourish your air-dried hair, braid damp hair before bed, and wake to beachy waves in the morning.
